Intensification of the manufacturing process of iron ore pellets with polymeric binder LENACRYL 1962 series


Оne of the technological methods which allows to improve and intensify pelletizing process of iron ore materials is application of high MW water-soluble polymers аs a binder.

The organic polymeric binders have an advantage – they are fully eliminated during heat treatment and do not bring in additional  pollution into iron ore product.


The concept of polymeric binders LENACRYL 1962 series has been developed by engineers and chemists of EWB s.r.o.It stands on new principals and dynamic mechanism of action of polymeric binder in charge.

The organic polymeric binders have an advantage – they are fully eliminated during heat treatment and do not bring in additional  pollution into iron ore product.

Theoretical mechanism of the polymer interaction with a charge material can be explained as following:

By adding the polymer into a wet charge – instant polymer swelling occurs. Along with that, cohesive interactions between polymer molecules are retained and the surface of swollen binder’s particles demonstrate fairly strong adhesive properties. The binder starts to work as a «snowball», it means that at the first moment of pelletizing process sticking of charge’s fine particles occurs on a swollen polymer’s granules.

Then, under a pellet formation, during its rotation and due to the influence of centrifugal forces in the pelletizer, polymer distribution occurs, because of its flowability inside the pellet structure with further trait of adhesive forces on its surface, which leads to the fast pellet growth.

Polymeric binder LENACRYL 1962 AVL was specially developed for the pelletizing processes of fine  iron ore concentrate according to the recommendation of specialists from metallurgical and mining processing mills.


LENACRYL 1962 AVL possesses with unique properties:

  • an instant swelling in a concentrate feed;
  • an optimal viscosity of the polymer, which provides the mechanical strength of  green pellets;
  • an optimal granules size distribution for the pellet’s germs formation.

Use of the polymeric binder LENACRYL 1962, with it low consumption (70-100 grams per tone), it  leads to the essential increase of the effectiveness of pellets formation:


  • Bentonite consumption reduce, in some cases bentonite can be completely replaced;
  • Pelletizing process stabilization and more narrow granulometry range of pellets;
  • Improvement of a bed porosity during the annealing process, which leads to the indurating machine efficiency increase;
  • Total iron content increase in pellets;
  • Gangue material reduce in pellets.

​Expected effect after polymeric binder LENACRYL 1962 application during the pelletizing process can be the following:

  • Specific electricity reduce;
  • Specific gas flow reduce;
  • Production efficiency increase without additional capital expenditures;
  • Semi-fixed costs reduce.

Dosing of polymeric binder

Precise dosing and homogeneous distribution of bulk material are very important for industrial usage of the polymeric binder. Whereas a low dosage of the binder (50-100 g per ton of charge) and its high solubility is necessary to provide uniform distribution in charge. This can be reached by using screw doser, which is controlled by a signal from transporter. The polymeric binder is dosed on the charge conveyor.

Requirements for the location of  dosing equipment of polymeric binder:

  •  Possibility to supply the binder on the surface of wet materials in order to prevent dusting.


  Polymeric binders of LENACRYL 1962 series based on the anionic polyacrylamides with specific range of hydrolysis degree and molecular weights.
